Field Trip 4 Laramide Porphyry Copper Systems and Superimposed Tertiary Extension: A Life Cycle Approach to the Globe-Superior-Ray Area Trip is full, new registrants will be wait-listed Leaders: Mark Barton, Eric Seedorff, David Maher (University of Arizona, Tucson), Bill Stavast (Phelps Dodge Exploration), Bob Kamilli, Tim Hayes, Keith Long, Gordon Haxel (U.S. Geological Survey), and Sterling Cook (ASARCO) Date: Sunday, September 30 through Tues, October 2, 2007 Cost: $425.00 No. of Participants: Minimum- 20; Maximum- 50 Starting Location: Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, Tucson Ending Location: Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, Tucson Description: This trip attempts to draw people with interests in both economic geology and tectonics, as well as petrology, geochemistry, and material flows. The trip presents results of the joint University of Arizona-U.S. Geological Survey Porphyry Copper Life Cycle Project and related studies. The area includes about a dozen Laramide porphyry copper deposits and related granodioritic to granitic plutons that were dismembered and variably tilted (locally >90 degrees) during mid-Tertiary extension. The area restores a 50-km long, 10- to 15-km deep slice along the Laramide arc. The trip examines portions of three of the plutons and their associated hydrothermal systems, including the ore bodies themselves, but also the sides, roots, and deep flanks of the hydrothermal systems, and presents evidence for their dismemberment. Trip Itinerary: Sunday, September 30 - Breakfast on own - Leave Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort at 7:00 am, heading north on Arizona Highway 77 - Lunch provided en route - Regional overview of the Laramide arc, regional structural geology, Catalina core complex, and Pirate fault near turnoff to Biosphere 2 - Synextensional sedimentation: Overview of mid-Tertiary sedimentary rocks of Hackberry Wash area from town of Kearney - Structural reconstruction of the Kelvin-Riverside porphyry copper system, Tea Cup-Grayback pluton, and examination of biotitic alteration, sodic-calcic alteration, and endoskarn on deep flanks of the system, Radio Tower area - Shallow levels of Kelvin-Riverside porphyry copper system and modern supergene enrichment and exotic copper system, Black Copper Wash - Overview of the Ray porphyry copper system and the Granite Mountain pluton and mineralized biotitized rocks from near the base of Ray porphyry copper deposit in road cuts on Arizona Highway 177 - Drive to San Carlos AZ; hotel accommodations provided at Best Western Apache Gold Hotel - Dinner on own Monday, October 1, 2007 - Breakfast included in room rate - Depart motel at 7:00 am for Ray porphyry copper system - Lunch provided en route - Return to San Carlos hotel - Dinner with evening talks on the mining history and geology of the Globe-Miami district at the Cobre Valley Country Club at 6:00 PM Tuesday, October 2, 2007 - Breakfast included in room rate - Depart hotel at 7:00 am for Apache Leap Plateau - Lunch provided en route - Tilting and dismemberment of a Laramide porphyry copper system: Overview of the Globe-Miami district from “Pierce Point” (Cherry Flat) - Dikes, quartz veins, greisen muscovite veins, brittle and ductile deformation in the Schultze Granite in root zone of the Miami Inspiration porphyry copper system, U. S. Highway 60 road cut near Pinto Creek - Series of stops along Old Highway to examine outcrops of the Schultze Granite, the source pluton for porphyry copper systems in the Globe-Miami-Superior area, to view contacts between intrusive phases, igneous-cemented breccias, unidirectional solidification textures, and hydrothermal veins - Overview of the site of the now-closed San Manuel-Kalamazoo mine and its structural setting: An example of the porphyry copper life cycle - Return to Hilton Tucson El Conquistador - Dinner on own Clothing and Safety Issues: Hard toed boots and clothing appropriate for warm weather (about 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) daytime). Other safety equipment that may be required will be supplied. Meals and Lodging: Lodging in double occupancy in San Carlos, Arizona. Lunch for all 3 days and dinner on Monday night are included in the field trip cost. |
